BCHS News and Notes – October 5, 2016

BCHS Families,
Here are some news and notes of things coming up at the high school for October:
1.  Monday, October 10, is a ½ day of school for students as this is also a professional development day for staff.  On this day, students will be released from school at 10:45 a.m.  This will be the same release time as the other ½ days, which are on December 6, March 8, and May 5.
2.  Fall Parent Teacher Conferences are coming up on October 18 and October 20.  PTC on October 18 are from 4:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and on October 20 from 3:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
3. PSAT/NMSQT: Bullock Creek High School will be offering the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) on Wednesday, October 19 at 7:55am.  Students interested in getting a jump-start on practicing for the SAT, this is a great opportunity.  While freshman and sophomores are eligible to take the test, only juniors can qualify to be a National Merit Scholar.  The cost is $15 and students can register in the Counseling Center.  There are 65 tests available, so students may register through October 13 or when we reach 65 registrants.
4. Picture retakes will take place on November 2.
5. Bullock Creek High School NHS will be hosting a blood drive on Friday, October 14.  Students interested in donating blood can sign up in the office.  A student must be 17 or older to give blood, however, a student who is 16 years old may give blood with parent/guardian permission.  If a student is giving blood for the first time, there is a first time Michigan Blood donors form that must be filled out.  This form is available in the high school office.  This is the same form that a 16-year- old student would use to get parent/guardian permission to give blood.
6. Rock present Jobs 101: Attached is a flyer from The Rock about a program that is a great way for our young people to be introduced to the “working world”.  At this program, students will learn skills that will help them find, get, and keep a job while exploring exciting career paths.  See the flyer for dates and times.
7.  Attached is a letter from Judge Allen from the Probate and Family Court.  This letter explains the truancy law and the process the courts have asked Midland County schools to use when dealing with absences. At Bullock Creek High School we have been following this process for the past two years and it has worked very well.  If you have any questions about our attendance policy or the process described in this letter, please contact Dennis Tomko or myself at 989-631-2340.
8.  Jostens was here on Monday and met with all sophomore students about class rings.  Your sophomore student should have brought home a packet of information.  Extra packets are available in the high school office. If you are interested in ordering a class year for your student, Jostens will be here during lunches on Thursday, October 6 to take orders.
9.  This is the time of year that we have a lot of college representatives coming to the high school to meet with students.  Students should listen to the daily announcements to find out when college representatives will be at the high school.  Students would then sign up in the counseling office to meet with a college representative.  Students may attend 2 in-school college representative meetings per school year.
10.  If you are dropping off a student to school in the morning and our school busses are lined up to drop of students, please drop your student off on the opposite side of the island area.  This will make it safer for all involved.
11. Congratulations to the Bullock Creek Equestrian Team who finished the day on Sunday in 2nd place at their Regional Competition, over all making them the Reserve Champions.  The team will now head to State competition that starts on October 13 and runs until October 16th.  Great job!
12.  On Friday, October 14, Creekers for a Cause and the BC Sports Boosters will be sponsoring SPYK night at the Varsity Football Game.  This is a special night to honor Mrs. Darlene Spyker, one of our staff members at the high school that is battling breast cancer.  People are asked to wear pink to show their support of those who are fighting breast cancer or for those who have lost their battle.   There will be a 50/50 drawing and cash donations to raise money and also Breast Cancer Awareness Activities.
13. Just a reminder that if you would like an easy way to keep up on high school events, you can view the daily announcements on our school district webpage. They are located under the Parents tab.
If you do have any questions, you can reach me at gorsucht@bcreek.org or at 989-698-3190.
Thanks,
