Nature Kindergarten – New for 2012!

We are excited to inform you of a new collaboration to enhance Kindergarten education at Floyd Elementary School. Bullock Creek School District and Chippewa Nature Center are taking initial steps to integrate nature into our kindergarten classrooms in the 2012-13 school year at Floyd Elementary School. Demand for this pilot project is based on the tremendous success that has been experienced at the Chippewa Nature Center in the preschool program. These kindergarten sections would meet all of the District and State requirements. As such, it will be inherently different from Nature Preschool at Chippewa Nature Center. The goal is to begin integrating nature into the regular kindergarten curriculum as much as is feasible.

To make this a reality we will be enhancing the outdoor space surrounding the school so it can be used as an extension of the classroom. Of course the property surrounding the school is fantastic for outdoor learning and will be utilized as much as possible. Also, a Chippewa Nature Center naturalist will be making regular visits to the kindergarten classrooms and assist the teachers in integrating nature into their regular lesson plans.

Superintendent Charles Schwedler said, “This is still a pilot project of the nature kindergarten concept. While we’re going to do everything possible to integrate nature into the curriculum it will still look very different from Nature Preschool. We appreciate the collaboration with the Chippewa Nature Center as we work to create classrooms that deliver a quality education with an emphasis on outdoor education.”

This pilot program is available to schools of choice applicants as well. Simply contact the school for the necessary paperwork.
