New Community Event to Collect Athletic Shoes for Area Students
“SNEAKERPALOOZA” Collecting Shoes and Socks at Midland Locations
MIDLAND, MI – A new community-wide effort has launched to provide quality athletic shoes and socks to area K-12 students for the 2013-2014 school year.
“SNEAKERPALOOZA” is a collaborative effort between Filling Midland’s Cup, Journey’s Coffee House and STEP UP (Success Through Education and Positive Coaching). The organizations have teamed up with local businesses to serve as drop-off locations for shoes and socks to distribute to students in kindergarten through 12th grades. SNEAKERPALOOZA’s goal is to ensure all students have a pair of new athletic shoes for the upcoming school year.
“We believe that shoes are so much more to a child than just something that covers their feet,” said Diana Butler, general manager of Journey’s Coffee House. “Children with new shoes feel important and special. Their self esteem is a little higher and they feel empowered to try new sports or activities. We want to come along families to help them with this small but important issue that many families face at the beginning of the school year.”
Collection sites will accept shoes and donations through Friday, August 16. Shoe distribution will take place Tuesday, August 20, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Carpenter Elementary School, 600 E. Carpenter Street in Midland.
Shoes and socks can be dropped off at any of the following collection sites in Midland:
- Journey’s Coffee House
- Element 22
- Runners Performance Footwear & Apparel
- Smitty’s Ironworks
- Seung-ni Fit Plex
- Midland Community Center
- Absolute Therapeutic Massage & Body Work
Cash donations can also be made at Messiah Lutheran and Journey’s Coffee House. Checks may be made out to Filling Midland’s Cup. If you make a donation at Journey’s, you can also receive a free Journey’s drink coupon.
