Floyd Principal’s Message

The 2011 school year is sneaking up on us and I wanted to send you a letter to welcome you back to another great school year. As always, the summer was busy with planning to make sure that your child is getting the most challenging curriculum as well as the strong support network that we have at Floyd Elementary School. With that said we are excited to welcome your child as they walk through our doors on September 6th.

Would you like your children to attend a school that…

• Has teachers who serve on state committees and help design curriculum at the state level?
• Has teachers and support staff that have been recognized with prestigious awards recognizing outstanding teaching and service to children (such as the Science Teacher of the Year Award from the American Chemical Society or the Odyssey Michigan History Teacher of the Year Award, United Way of Midland County Shining Star Award, Safe and Sound Child Advocacy Center Leadership Award, Michigan Institute for Educational Management Crystal Apple Award, Spirited Teacher Award from the Saginaw Spirit)? (yes, these have all been won by our staff!)
• Encourages students to work proactively to keep our school safe for all students?
• Is continually revising curriculum to best meet the needs and challenges of all students?
• Has a strong partnership with outside organizations such as the West Midland Family Center to support student learning and social development beyond the school hours?
• Has paraprofessionals that have achieved rigorous certification as Highly Qualified to work with your child?
• Has a Parent Teacher organization that welcomes your participation and plans wonderful family events?

For those of you that are new, this is just a few of the great points of our school. For those families returning you already know that your child will be attending one of the finest elementary schools in the state!

I invite you to mark your calendar for August 31st from 6:00 p.m. until 6:45 p.m. This will be our open house where your child can find their desk, meet their teacher, and get the “lay of the land” all before the first day of school. We have found that this really helps with those first day jitters 

When school begins on the 6th of September, a reminder, that students may enter the building at 8:40 a.m. As with last year, breakfast will be available at no cost to all students at this time. Our dismissal for students will be 3:40 p.m. each day.

Again, I look forward to seeing your entire family on August 31st and wish you a safe August!

Kids First,

Rod Dishaw, Principal
Floyd Elementary School
