1-5-15 GIRLS ON THE RUN INFORMATION

Parents,
For the last few years, the Girls on the Run program has been offered to Pine River Elementary 3rd-5th grade female students.  This is a wonderful program that girls have very much enjoyed.
For the 2014-15 school year, the program has been in the process of being revamped and is now ready to begin with the process of registering students for the spring session.
The entire registration process is now being completed online through the Girls on the Run organization at www.girsontherunmidland.org  All schools have been taken out of the process of registering students and collection of money for the program.  If you are interested in having your daughter participate, you do need to register online.  Registration is first come, first served and does not guarantee a spot in the program.  If you have questions, please call or email Ann with any questions or concerns:  Ann.Horowitz@girsontherun.org or 989-698-3756.
I have copied the article that was in Sunday, January 4th, Midland Daily News, which has much more information regarding this program.
Sincerely,
Debra Bradford

Girls on the Run gearing up for spring season

A retooled Girls on the Run is back with online sign-ups for the spring season beginning soon, as well as the first ever fund raiser for the program.
Girls on the Run has operated in Midland and Gladwin counties through Shelterhouse for seven years, teaching more than 1,600 girls life skills and core values for living an emotionally healthy and physically active lifestyle. The local program’s spring sessions have grown from 52 participants during the inaugural season to 250 participants in the spring of 2014.
“We’re really excited,” said Cristina Myers, board member and director of fund raising and marketing. “I think it’s going to be a really good program this year.”
This year’s spring registration begins online on Jan. 5 at www.girlsontherunmidland.org, and is open until Jan. 30. For those in need of paper registration, forms will be available at local elementary schools.
Also Jan. 30 is the Girls on the Run Valentine Bash.
The fundraiser begins at 6 p.m. at the Midland Country Club, and includes dancing, contests, a silent auction, heavy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Tickets can be purchased online starting Jan. 5.
Ann Horowitz, board president and council director, said the online registration and fund raising event aren’t the only changes for Girls on the Run.
The program has been run by one person in the past; it now is being headed up by an eight-member board, each championing a different aspect of the program, from day-to-day operations to fund raising and more, she said. The program also had only one source of funding, and now the focus is on supporting it in a variety of ways.
Pricing for this year will use a sliding scale from $20 to $150, based on household income, Horowitz said, adding the national average price per girl is $117. Every girl will receive a T-shirt and shoes.
The program is in need of coaches to make the season a success. Horowitz said the time commitment is about four hours per week for 12 weeks total. Each coach will be certified in CPR and first aid, which is offered by Girls on the Run, and will attend a coach training session. The trainings are offered on two different weekends in January.
“They’ll get all the tools they need,” Myers said.
Horowitz added that new coaches also will be working with those who have coached before.
The season begins on Feb. 16, and culminates with the Dow RunWalk in the spring.
The after-school program is for girls in the third through fifth grade. Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique, as well as run. The 5k run at the end of the program is to celebrate the experience and give a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment.
