2012 will mark the 50th anniversary of Bullock Creek High School. Alumni from BCHS have set a goal to raise $50,000 by 2012, to commemorate this anniversary by providing scholarships that recognize excellence in our graduates. While the goal sounds very aggressive, it can be reached by a minimum donation of $10, from each graduate!
Our forward thinking, hard working parents and supportive community brought their dreams to fruition when Bullock Creek High School opened its’ doors in 1962 to ninth and tenth graders. The junior high school for 7th and 8th grades would be in another wing of the yet to be completed building. The community built this building to insure that the Bullock Creek area children could count on them for a bright future through education.
In 2005, a class reunion committee of alumni from the first four years of graduates, discussed ways to honor our deceased classmates, parents and community members at our upcoming reunion. A decision was made to fore go the usual tree planting and to walk in our community’s familiar footsteps by ‘paying it forward’.
A small committee was formed and with guidance from the Midland Area Community Foundation, a scholarship fund was established to enable future BCHS graduates to further their education. Donations were made, a silent auction was held, classmates were honored, and the Bullock Creek Alumni Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund was established.
For the past five years, alumni and friends have donated money to this wonderful fund, and four scholarships have been awarded to deserving BCHS graduates. We need more help from our alumni, from our friends, and from our community at large.
You may not have known one of the founding parents who picked up a shovel, or donated equipment or their time after work to build a future for every child who graduated from Bullock Creek High School. However, if you knew a person from the Bullock Creek area, and if you are committed to helping graduates who are building blocks to our future, please take the time to honor them through your generous donations to this scholarship fund. Help us make “50 for 50” a reality, so we can provide support to our future BCHS graduates’ dreams.
Important tax information: Donations count for the Michigan Community Foundation Tax Credit. One half of your donation is deducted from your MI taxes owed. A big savings for you! (This may change this year because of budget problems) If you itemized your deductions on your Federal return, your donation will reduce your adjusted gross income and lower your taxes there as well.
Brochures with information about the scholarship can be picked up at any BCS office or at the Midland Area Community Foundation (www.midlandfoundation.org). MACF will continue to invest and administer these funds, and the grant selection process.
Please make your checks payable to: Midland Area Community Foundation and indicate they are for the BCHS Alumni Scholarship Fund. They will send you a receipt for your tax records. The form below may be used to insure your donation is credited to the correct fund. Electronic donations can be made by accessing the MACF web site. Be sure to select the BCHS Alumni Scholarship Fund from the drop down menu.
One final request. Please help us assure everyone who may be interested in donating, or those who may need help with college expenses are made aware of this fund. If you could put a comment on your face book page, forward the email, or talk with businesses that may display our brochures, that would be a big help. We have an email address (LancerSpirit50@HotMail.COM) for questions or comments. Please let us know what you think.
