Floyd Elementary Update 4/11/12

April 11, 2012

Dear Parents:

About 11:40 a.m. today our physical education teacher detected smoke and a smoldering smell coming from a ballast in our gym lights at Floyd Elementary.  She immediately informed the office and maintenance staff and the decision was made to evacuate all students outside and call the fire department to investigate.

The fire department arrived, confirmed that our maintenance staff had indeed dealt with the burning ballast, looked for signs that a fire may have spread and gave us the all clear to use the building.  The children were outside under the supervision of their teachers and paraprofessionals during this time.

We practice fire drills for a reason.  We will NEVER take chances with the health and safety of any of our children.  Thankfully, the skilled professionals that we have at school moved quickly into action and dealt with the issue immediately.  The entire staff is to be commended for their quick action to ensure student safety.  We are lucky to have all of them working with our kids.

Once again please be assured that due to the quick action of our staff we exercised an abundant amount of caution.  We regularly review our safety procedures and I am pleased to report that everything worked just as we have practiced.

If you have any further questions please feel free to give me a call.

Kids First,

Rod Dishaw, Principal
